HELEN S. JARRETT is a proud 43-year civil servant for New York City and a 33-year community activist. She began her career in 1981 with NYPD as an Office Aide, was promoted in 1989 to Office Associate, Principal Administrative Associate in 1993, Assistant Center Manager in 1999, Deputy Director in 2001, and Administrative Manager in 2010.

As a CWA Local 1180 member, she served on the Education Committee, and currently serves on the following committees: Civil Rights & Equity, Legislative & Political Action, and Women’s. She is a former Chair of the Brooklyn Borough Community Coordinating Committee, a previous Shop Steward, and liaison to the NYS Civil Service Merit Council. 

Helen spearheads CWA Local 1180’s Equal Pay Day rally and annual Labor Day Parade. She has walked many picket lines with labor’s brothers and sisters at UAW Harper Collins Publishing, Google Alphabet Workers, Fordham University Grad Students, News Guild Workers, and SAG-AFTRA, and rallied with Amazon Workers and the Bird Union. 

She is a member of CWA District 1’s Legislative Political Action team, where she liaises with elected officials. In 2017, she was elected to CWA Local 1180’s Executive Board as a Member-at-Large and is currently the Union’s Mobilization Coordinator. 

Helen is a delegate to the CWA National Minority Caucus, District 1’s Leadership Conference, CWA National Convention, and the New York City Central Labor Council. She also serves in multiple roles at the direction of the National Public Healthcare Education Workers (PHEW) Vice President, including the GOTV Squad and the Working Group, and assists with programming for the PHEW Activist Academy.

Helen is on the Board of Directors for Brooklyn Neighborhood Improvement Association, is a member of Community Board 5 (East New York), former member of the Transportation Committee, and former elected Alternate and Judicial Delegate for the 60th Assembly District.

She is currently a member of various constituency groups, including A. Phillip Randolph Institute, Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW), where she is an elected Trustee and Executive Board member, Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, National Association for the Advancement for Colored People, and the NYC Black Women’s Political Club.

Helen is a successful graduate of the NYS AFL-CIO/Cornell ILR, Union Leadership Institute, Latino Leadership Institute, and attended the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies Public Administration program.
