Gerald Brown
First Vice President
Gerald “Jerry” Brown became 1st Vice President in 2022 after having served as 2nd Vice President, Recording Secretary, Member-at-Large, and Shop Steward.
Since 2011, Gerald has served as a Trustee with oversight of the Local’s benefits funds. Since January 2015, he has been Trustee Manager of the Education Fund, which includes oversight of Local 1180’s participation with the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (CUNY SLU) that include sponsorship for undergraduate and graduate degrees and various certificate programs; the college and book reimbursement programs; the Union’s adult education programs; and additional ad hoc programs.
Gerald is a career civil servant, having held CWA Local 1180 titles of Principal Administrative Associate, Computer Associate Tech Support, and Administrative Manager. He has been employed in four major NYC agencies: Health+Hospitals, Department of Education, Board of Higher Education, and the Human Resources Administration where he was a Supervising Auditor with a staff of 27 assigned to revenue-producing projects.
As a member of Local 1180’s Executive Board, Gerald brings the educational and career development concerns of the membership to the forefront. He lobbies annually at the New York State Legislature and the New York City Council for funding that affords members the opportunity to receive 30 undergraduate credits and 30 graduate credits from CUNY SLU. As Chairperson of the Local’s Legislative and Political Committee, he coordinates the Union’s legislative and political programs and makes sure screenings for candidates for political office are open to the membership. He represents Local 1180 at CWA District 1, the NYS Public Employee Conference, NYS AFL-CIO, NYC Central Labor Council, and the NYC Council.
Gerald initiated Local 1180’s new member orientation, which allows members to learn first-hand about Union programs and benefits. He also coordinates many webinars during the year, including NYCERS, Civil Service, homeownership, financial, and education.
He is always open to listen to the concerns of the membership to determine how the Local can assist with legislative and political matters.
Gerald earned his Associate’s Degree in Applied Science from CUNY Tech, Bachelor of Arts Degree Cum Laude from Hunter College, and a Master’s Degree in Human Resources Management from New York University.
